Paperback, 312 pages
Published September 8th 2011 by Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd.

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

See Recommended Astrology Books below…

As a professional astrologer and tarot reader, I looked forward to getting this book. There’s a sprinkling of titles on how astrology connects to tarot but no one (to my knowledge) has attempted to teach tarot readers how to read their own chart by providing a great overview of astrology terms and concepts. Nor have they suggested that astrologers could learn tarot. In this way, Corrine Kenner is (yet again) ahead of the curve.

Tarot and Astrology: Enhance Your Readings with the Wisdom of the Zodiac

Although I learned the basics of astrology first, I took to tarot reading far faster and better. It wasn’t until Tr. Uranus Opposition Na. Uranus happened, which activated my third and ninth houses, that I learned astrology deeply and became a professional astrologer.

Previous to becoming an astrologer, I used astrology briefly in my work and in connecting meaning to the tarot cards. I had known the signs and planets well enough to do so and I considered myself at the beginner’s level in astrology.

This book will help you arrive at a level between beginner and intermediate astrological understanding. However, it does not teach you how to interpret a chart accurately or deeply. Though it will help you perform deeper tarot readings and give you a head-start in becoming an astrologer, who reads charts, if that’s what you want to accomplish.

If you are new to tarot, remember not to take everything an author says as truth. A lot of what is said can be subjective, and the author’s personal preference that they do not disclose as such. My rule of thumb is to read at least three to five books on a subject (preferably from different time periods) to get a fuller understanding and more accurate connection to a subject.

The book intersperses tarot card meanings and descriptions which include connecting the sign, planet, or combination of sign-planet ruling the card with astrological phenomena (titled Cosmic Connection) such as what eclipses and a void-of-course Moon are, and mostly new-to-me astrologically inspired tarot spreads. Although I have extensive astrological knowledge, I remained interested and enjoyed how succinctly and helpful things were explained that are normally difficult-to-understand for the lay-person.

The astrological nor tarot information are complete. For example, the seventh house is also about ‘negative & positive projections’ (a very important and necessary thing to learn) but it’s not mentioned in the book. The 7th house (Libra as a mirror reflection) is what you see in others and the first is what others see in you, amongst other things. It also doesn’t include asteroids, such as Juno (co-rules Libra alongside Venus). With the tarot, it doesn’t go into the mechanics of tarot reading. This is only a problem if you expect that everything you’ll need to do tarot or astrology readings will be found in this one book.

In Chapter Eleven, A Simplified Guide to Chart Interpretation, I wish Ms. Kenner would have called it A Simplified Guide to Tarot-Astro Chart Interpretation.

The method described is a hybrid of tarot and astrology (as she noted in the introductory chapter). This is not purely astrology or purely tarot so be sure to understand this is a brand new method of working with tarot and astrology.

Most seasoned astrologers would likely not want to work this method as they have enough to work with already to keep them busy and deep into the symbology and language of astrology. And I imagine they would think of this method as an unnecessary diversion and distraction.

What I am interested in knowing is: Where did the author get her information from? While there were a few good books listed in the bibliography, it is lackluster and doesn’t include classics that most astrologers would recommend.

The information in the book is crisp but where did she learn it from? I would have liked to see some shout-out’s to other authors and teachers as this author is now established as an excellent tarot writer. It’s time to share sources. I’ll list, below, some recommended serious yet accessible astrology books for those tarot readers who want to become genuine astrologers.

Overall I was impressed and delighted with this book and Ms. Kenner’s creativity. Thank you!

Connect more deeply to tarot

+This book will give you solid astrological information to help you connect more deeply with your tarot cards and therefore giving richer meaning to your tarot readings.

+ This book is a great overview of astrology and how it works.

+ Qabalistic reflections are offered as a bonus to the topic of mixing astrology with tarot.

+ The book cover is very lovely, the book itself nice to read. I can fold and curl over the pages and it doesn’t harm the spine.

+ Mostly new (to me) and worthy astrological tarot spreads!

It’s unlikely you’ll become a master astrologer through this book alone.

- This book may give the impression that it will give you the tools to “interpret an astrological chart”; however, what it really does is give you knowledge of how astrology works and information on reading charts in a hybrid manner.

- It takes a lot of practice, skill, daily study, and critical thinking to synthesize a chart successfully. There’s nothing in this book that teaches you how to connect all the elements nor does it give a thorough treatment in aspect or chart delineation.

- “…you’ll master the connections between astrology and tarot — not as two separate fields of study, but as a seamless, integrated whole.” Please don’t buy this statement. Astrology is a separate field of study. If you suggest this to Astrologers, they are not likely to take kindly to you thinking this way. I believe I understand what the author wanted to accomplish; however, tarot (visual art) is more Neptunian and Astrology (mental art) — Uranian. And both have a connection to Saturn. These fields overlap, they connect, and you can learn from them and use them in your work BUT they are not the same and therefore can not be a “seamless, integrated whole”. Astrology, the study of stars, also came first.

- The reverse is also true. If you are an astrologer reading this book, you’ll grasp tarot better but you’ll unlikely feel confident to read tarot and it’s unlikely you’ll want or need to “bring your charts to life” with tarot since astrology is already rich and vibrant in its own symbolism. You may, however, use the tarot imagery in your blog posts.

- The Sun & Moon are commonly known as planets but they are actually called luminaries.

- Because the glossary doesn’t start from the beginning, some readers may go ‘huh’ when they read astrological jargon not already explained. In this case, simply turn to that section and read it first.

Recommended Reading and Resources

I recommend purchasing and using this book as a solid reference guide. Not only because it will deepen your tarot readings (if you haven’t already connected the astrological associations) but it will give you a general, behind-the-scenes look at astrology, natal horoscopes, and what it means. Just keep in mind that you’ll likely only gain knowledge of how astrology is used and what the jargon means in a basic way. After-all, it is not an astrology book. As Ms. Kenner states, “Like a travel guide, this book has given you a preview of new worlds that await you” and “Be warned, however, that no guide can help you discover (sp. error) a direct route to the mastery of tarot and astrology”.

Recommended Astrology Books

These books will give you a well-rounded understanding about astrology; however, you’ll want to have read through and practiced with at least 20 astrology books on not only general astrological topics but special interest and specialized ones as well. You’ll also find astrology books can be more expensive and split up into volumes or a series. I feel that’s because astrologers (a traditionally male dominated field) and readers of astrology books value this work and there’s so many new insights to share. Hopefully tarot readers (traditionally female dominated field) take a page from astrologers in valuing their work more.  And with more professional male tarot readers, having a known presence in the field, that’s likely a good outcome.

Day 1 – 120 questions in 30 days, the TarotSeek way (objective self-tarot reading)

From the blog of TarotSeek
Well it’s my first day of 120 in 30.

Even though in my book, Psychic Jucy’s TarotSeek™ Learn How to Read Tarot Cards for Yourself, Volume 1, I would suggest not to do this, I asked double and triple questions per sheet of paper and it all still worked. But if you have problems with answering just one question, you may want to heed the advice in the book.

I was worried TarotSeek ‘wouldn’t’ work today. I said to myself, “Does TarotSeek really work or is it just a figment of my imagination?  How is it possible? Maybe naysayers and those who are disinterested in it are right — it’s a piece of worthless crap that doesn’t work!” But it did work for me today, as it has worked for me many a-day.

I also decided to dissect my ‘stream of consciousness’ by pulling out sections that complete an idea, even if it were only a few words.  I marked this with ‘/’s. I’m forever learning and TarotSeek feels like a living and breathing book.

Please note that the questions and most certainly the responses, are ‘deeply’ personal so I’m finding a way to share myself and the subjects of my queries without giving it all away. In other words, I won’t be sharing ALL of my session data.  Some of my questions relate to the past, some present, and some future oriented.  Today, I’ll present my whole TarotSeek session; however, I’ll choose one question to present going forward.  I will have done my 4 questions (the minimum is 3 and you can do as many as 6-8 once you get used to the method).

Also, right or wrong, do avoid putting a negative spin or judgment on what I have to say.  It’s one of the negative characteristics that can manifest in tarot readers. Remember to ask questions, it’s the TarotSeek way…

Question format for sharing TarotSeek sessions

[date] – [card name]
Question: [what was your question?]
Response: [what did you say about the card you got?]
Analysis: [what does this mean to you once you saw what you were answering?]
Advice, Action, or Suggestion: [what is the outcome?]

The last two questions are posted in the .pdf which are to be saved along with your session papers. I have wrote far more in answering the Analysis and Advice questions because I’m doing it in a journal rather than on the pieces of paper. I would probably write a lot less on paper. And that’s probably why I like the audio recording sessions best.

Question #1

3 of Swords

Question: Why did X stop talking to me? What’s the truth?
Response: The truth hurts / mental pain / anguish and fear / sensitive to conflict / a third lover / too much bad stuff will happen if lets love loose / the heart aches / moody / mental unhappiness.
Analysis: X stopped talking to me because it was or would cause mental conflict that would lead to emotional distress. There’s a third person involved. Either he has a girlfriend or believes me having a husband calls off any type of friendship we could enjoy. Or maybe he hasn’t got over a bad break-up and is coming out of one (this, I don’t know). I’m also demanding of the truth. I want others to be direct with me and X’s astrological configuration sort of ‘prevents’ that. X is also an ‘air’ type person so getting a ‘mental’ card is apt. So X loves deeply and fears, maybe, falling in love with me? Or getting too personally involved with me? He also might be fickle with his affections and whenever he feels a lack of the Sun, he prances off to the next big ‘high’.
Advice, Action, or Suggestion: I’m a flirty Venusian but I’m fully committed to my husband. Still, I enjoy deep and emotional connections with others (men and women but especially men and for good reason). I crave it. I can be attracted to someone’s personality and how I feel around them. And I introduce my husband to everyone I meet and keep him in the loop so nothing is a secret. That’s the way I like it. I’m open and free. And since my man has it ‘going on’, he doesn’t get jealous and frankly, there’s no reason. I lavish him with love and attention and he knows where he stands. But I have to realize that not everyone is so confident and connected to different kinds of love and how it manifests itself. Next thought… I’m amazed at the fact that I asked: What’s the truth and got the response “The truth hurts”. I’m not sure if the truth hurts for X or it hurts for me. That makes me come up with a new question for my next session. Since I don’t think close ended questions give much depth, I’m going to be careful in crafting an open ended question. How about this: What is the truth? What is the truth as it relates to X and my last question? So I’m going to put that away for my next session. I may also share my findings with X so we can open dialogue but I’ll probably just keep asking questions about the whole matter, especially as it relates to having long-term friendships with people (in general). With an empty 11th house, friendships are an odd one for me anyway.

Question #2

2 of Swords

Question: What are X2′s feelings for me? Why do I suddenly start missing his presence so much? Is he thinking about me when that happens?
Response: Protecting one’s heart / Not wanting to see what is there / Turning one’s back to a sea of emotions / Being pure and good / making a wise decision / Being distant and calm so as not to get hurt.
Analysis: Well, this is a perfect response. I won’t get into too much here as this is a deeply private connection with someone from the past. Bottom line: They can’t handle their emotions as it relates to me. I am not ‘normal’ and how people feel about me usually isn’t very ‘normal’ either. I can elicit strong reactions from others and I let it all out in a deep and raw way. They too are also deeply feelings oriented and tend to get wrapped up in challenging ways that question their values so they are “being pure and good”. So they have also decided to cut themselves off, “making a wise decision”. This response is very ‘on-target’.
Advice, Action, or Suggestion: There’s not much to do here. I really miss this person and I imagine they miss me too but not every connection is right to manifest or continue in a physical way. No matter how much of a good fit there is, there can be an intensely bad fit on the flip-side. Continued friendship wouldn’t likely work, at least not now. (A lot of my clients have a hard time accepting that while they feel so close and attracted to someone, there may be something deeply ‘against’ their union. I can figure this out through astrology, by the way). I have written more privately about this question in my “Challenge Journal”. Bottom line? I will continue to accept the situation, not make waves by reaching out, and hope they will come around one day on their own. And maybe I’ll create some artwork to express my feelings constructively and independently. I am curious to know if he is thinking of me when I get all ‘nostalgic’ so I’ll ask. When I look back, what is X feeling or want as it relates to me?

Question #3

Ace of Wands

Question: What do I need to do to associate myself with stronger, warmer, more confident, non-threatened people who want to support my efforts?
Response: A firm hand grasps the powerful object / They remove fallen leaves, representing falls tears or bad emotions (they are not really as they appear) / Clarity comes from cloudiness / Bust through / A lot of energy is needed / Be supernatural and emanate warmth yet be firm.
Analysis: Wow. Again, TarotSeek amazes me. It’s truly a gift (and also a curse too, as the saying goes). Contact these people. If I see someone who I believe exhibit these qualities, just reach-out. I could read the next bit two ways: 1) People who don’t appear put together may actually be very put together and to consider this or 2) They are the type to see through what many others may overlook (as written in 1). I need to give off an upbeat and passionate vibe to attract the right people in my life. I need to stop playing small (my Virgo nature) and just be wildly off-the-charts egotistical and selfish but with WARMTH. So, bring out the Leo and let my Cap rising be firm if and when I sense people wanting to cross boundaries. What would David Bowie do? While being egotistical and selfish may seem wrong or won’t work, I know (for myself) that the world is backwards. It operates in the exact opposite way that we suppose.
Advice, Action, or Suggestion: David Bowie (one of my favorite musicians) is a Capricorn Sun, Leo Moon, and Aquarius Rising. I am Leo Sun, Virgo Moon, Capricorn/Aquarius rising. Watching him in interviews, I can see how he is quite warm and friendly BUT he is firm when he feels a question crosses the line. He flat out says: No, I won’t be telling you that. End of story. No babble. He doesn’t worry about offending people (I do). He’s also a creative 3 life path, like me. He deeply desires/d being respected and being seen as an authority. I desire freedom and communication (teaching) yet have a past life as a respected (maybe even feared) authority. So I can have an air of demanding or wanting what Bowie desires / desired. Back to my advice to myself: Stop trying to be noticed or paid attention to. Just be. Be the person I want to associate myself with. Be MORE of what I am, not more of what others want me to be.

Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” by Marianne Williamson

Shout out to David

Funny how secrets travel,
I’d start to believe if I were to bleed
Thin skies, the man chains his hands held high
Cruise me blond
Cruise me babe
A blond belief beyond beyond beyond
No return
No return

I’m deranged
Deranged my love
I’m deranged down down down
So cruise me babe
cruise me baby
And the rain sets in
It’s the angel-man
I’m deranged
The clutch of life
and the fist of love
Over your head
Big deal Salaam
Be real deranged Salaam
Before we reel
I’m deranged

Question #4

Knight of Pentacles

Question: What don’t people like about TarotSeek?
Response: A strong body / Strong resources / Looking for what is big and shiny / Powerful, dark, older, and friendly / Been around the block / Wanting and having something to give / Bringing the goods, here – have this / Bold and daring within an upright, old school environment.
Analysis: I knew many tarot readers held on to their traditions and that TarotSeek is radical but I didn’t realize it was that innovative to cause people to run the other way. I do have strong Aquarius in my chart, where it matters most. I’m Uranian in that way. It causes me to beat to my own drum, go my own way, and not want to do the same thing over and over again but that isn’t always well-received. Moving on… I can look at my response in a number of different ways. It can say that many tarot readers feel they know what they are doing and have their own things they want to share and so feel threatened by my own work or I have been around the block, tarot reading and I have something to share and I’m doing it in a bold and forceful way. As in, I’m here. Here it is. Come and get it, at a price. And tarot readers may not like this. Maybe they feel I haven’t paid my dues, not popular enough, not big enough and would rather focus on the “big and shiny” authors and teachers of tarot. It’s more ‘comfortable’ and what they might tell themselves, “a safe bet”. Maybe they feel I haven’t offered enough resources or cited enough sources or that they have enough tarot resources to get the job done.
Advice, Action, or Suggestion: Well, this is a hard one. It’s uncomfortable to answer and it’s sad and deflating, quite frankly. First thing that came to mind is: Ask another question. So the next question will be: How can I make TarotSeek more appealing and get the word out that it exists and works? I also did a TarotSeek session shortly before publishing, on how TarotSeek would be perceived. Reading it now, I think I didn’t put enough effort into my question or follow it up appropriately. And it was a fatalistic question because it started with Will. . . ? And I didn’t follow it enough. It would have been great if I asked: If I add the forum, will it be used if people don’t ‘get it’ or react emotionally ‘bad’ to the guide? I was thinking the ‘no’ result was related to the sessions. But it could be that they had a bad reaction to both the guide and their sessions. Well, that’s all I want to say about this, for now. If you want to offer some advice, I’ll be thankful. Leave a comment or contact me. I’m also thankful for the various positive peer reviews received.

What’s next?

This tarot challenge lasts for 30 days. It ends on September 30, 2011 (during the sign of Libra). Consider doing a blog about your TarotSeek sessions and let me know. Join the forum to get help analyzing your responses or advice on what to do next. Comment here with your results. Do try, my Virgo pleads with you, to use this format for sharing. (Though I wonder: Will anyone else do this other than myself?) It’s nice and neat and makes it easy to connect with what you are doing. And use one of the Challenge Journals to help you explore your responses.

Purchase the guide. If you need a coupon (can’t afford buying this guide at the current price), ask. However, if you get a coupon do appreciate and reciprocate by sharing the joy of TarotSeek and encouraging people who express a desire to self-read to pick up their own copy. Namaste.

I’ll post one of my questions a day. Please follow the TarotSeek blog. Go there, read, comment, share…
